    Answer: There are locks for all the rotational planes of the vise. They have held for the kind of torque I have applied to them. But of course, that depends upon how much torque you need to apply and how well you can crank the locking system down. If heavy hammering is necessary for you, I would not get this vise but look for an old fashioned straight vise you can bolt down to your bench. Simple hammering is tolerated by this vise IME.
