- V.S.KHANDEKAR, THE WELL KNOWN MARATHI LITTERATEUR HAS EDITED A FEW OF THE STORIES WRITTEN BY EMINENT WRITERS IN THE EARLY CENTURY. THIS INCLUDES STORIES BY HARI NARAYAN APTE, DIWAKAR KRISHNA, V. S. SUKHTANKAR, Y. G. JOSHI, LAKSHMANRAO SARDESIA AND WAMAN CHORGHADE. TRANSLATION OF 'SHRIMATI' BY RAVINDRANATH TAGORE IS INCLUDED HEREIN. WHILE DESCRIBING THE CHARACTERISTICS OF A STORY, AMERICAN CRITIQUE CLAYTON HAMILTON HAD SAID THAT, 'FOR A STORY TO BE IMPRESSIVE AN AUTHOR SHOULD TAKE CARE THAT THE PLACES, INCIDENCES, CHARACTERS, TIME AND EXPLANATION SHOULD NOT BE LENGTHY. WRITING SHOULD BE SHORT AND PRECISE. IN A SHORT STORY, THE SUBJECT OR THE INCIDENCE DO NOT HELD MUCH IMPORTANCE. RATHER LIFE WITH ITS VERSATILITY IS IMPORTANT AND THE PERSONALITY OF THE AUTHOR WHO CONSIDERS THIS LIFE IN A POETIC YET TRUTHFUL MANNER BECOMES IMPORTANT. AFTER READING THIS COLLECTION BY THE EMINENT WRITERS, THE READER WILL SURELY RECOGNISE THEIR CONTRIBUTION TO THE PROGRESS OF MARATHI SHORT STORIES.
