- For application, clean the surface before treatment as sodium silicate will not adhere to oil or grease. Use a mix ratio of four-parts water to one-part sodium silicate. Apply a coat to the surface using a mop and allow to thoroughly dry. Then apply two more coats for best coverage. For use as an adhesive, sodium silicate is an excellent adhesive to seal cardboard cartons and applying labels. Use full strength or partially diluted with water. For general cleaning, mix one cup with two gallons of water. For food preservation, use a mix ratio of 9-parts water to one-part sodium silicate, and cover the eggs with the solution to about 1-2 inches above eggs, then store in a cool place.
